NAPKINS!

As promised, here are some recent drawings on napkins, courtesy of the Disney commissary. Since they're napkins and easily disposable, you don't tend to over-think things and analyze what you're doing. As a result, the drawings come out loose and fun! The problem I face now is that I want all my napkin drawings to come out great, so it kinds defeats the point. I like the fact that these particular drawings are somewhat interactive, with the second half of the vignette on the back side. I think I might start doing more of these, maybe having a set up on one side and a gag on the other.

Birthday Doodles

There's something about a blank sheet of white paper that is very frightening. I'm sure everyone has felt it. Whether you're working on a drawing, essay, or painting, the pressure of producing something "amazing" or "profound" can be quite daunting. That's one reason why I love birthdays! I get to draw cards for my friends in 2 seconds, hunched in my car, parked in front of the restaurant where I'm about to meet them for the festivities. Another reason I love birthdays is I get to blow up balloons! But enough of that...
The drawing above was for my friend Eric (duh). This one was especially fun because I didn't have time to draw in the car. So I had to sneak the gift, a dvd wrapped in paper made from a Whole Foods bag, to the bathroom and draw in there. Now I'm not saying that these are the best drawings or even good for that matter, but there's just something about them that I like. So right when I give them to their recipients, I immediately have to tell them to not throw them away and to make a copy for me. What I think also adds to it is the fun of drawing on things that you just happen to have in front of you. I usually carry a sketchbook with me wherever I go, but on some occasions I either forget it, or don't want to lug it around. The drawing below is a prime example, a sketch of a band on stage, done on a page from an LA Weekly. Napkins are another favorite of mine. I think I'll post some napkin drawings tomorrow.

Last night I was testing out uploading some quicktime movies onto my website, and sure enough, some friends of mine somehow found that test site and the short film I put up there. I'm thinking my girlfriend Kellie told them about it since she was helping me figure out the html via phone. I'll have to deal with her later. Anyways, I just decided to link it here, for the whole world to see. I did this short film a while ago right when I purchased my new video camera. My friend Morgan Kelly and I just made up this film on the spot in like 15 min. then I edited it that night. I was meant to be a test and the lighting is real bad, but here it is anyway. Snacktime!

Zippidy-Do

I just purchased an official bootleg DVD of Disney's Song of the South from the San Diego Comic-Con. I'm guessing it was transferred from the laserdisc because the quality is really good and the Walt Disney titles in the beginning are like totally 80'sd-out. Man, this is a good film! My friends and I were watching it last night and doing some drawing studies from it. The character animation is so goddamn good it's sickening. Uncle Remus was really fun to draw as well. Did you ever notice how white his eyes are?! They're like totally matte white, as if someone went in afterwards and painted them out. It kinda creepy, but funny as well.This is from the dance scene after Brer Fox and Bear capture Brer rabbit in the tar. My feeble drawing doesn't do it justice, but the poses and timing in these scenes are amazing. Here is a great laughing snarl from Brer Fox. They say that when doing the voice for Brer Fox, James Baskett talked so fast that the animators had a real hard time getting the lip sync straight.

This kid was trying to hide a frog in his hat or something. Comedy gold.

And finally this whinny brat Bobby Driscoll (who later went on to voice Peter Pan, and then die of a drug overdose in New York, or so my friend tells me.) Just because your parents are splitting up and you're forced to spend summer vacation on a boring old plantation doesn't mean you have to cry about it. Good 'ol Uncle Remus is there to cheer you up though!

Howdy yall! Welcome to my B-log! I was inspired by my friends Fred, Katie, and Tony, who all just started awesome blogs. So I decided to join in on the fun. It's gonna be a place where I post drawings, and idears, and stories... pretty much anything that comes to mind I"ll try to post. Hopefully people will come, look, and leave funny comments for me to read. And if anything, it'll be a shamless self-promoting machine that'll soon get out of control. Hooray!
