El Tigre - Cancelled

Well, technically "Not picked up." Apparently good animation, art direction, writing, and characters don't mean anything to the real people in charge at Nickelodeon. Oh, and heart. This show had fucking heart! What show has that nowadays?! El Tigre is no more.
Oh yeah, if this post seems familiar, reference this

man, that really really stinks. I heart your show, here's hoping it does well number wise and comes back around anyway.
isn't it doing well?
ratings
Didn't sponge bob come from a cruddy late night time slot to become the cultural juggernaut it is?! I know someone who used to work on that show, that had to battle with said "higher ups" that it was a great. now they all have solid gold barbeques..... or whatever it is that execs buy with thier merch cash.

Awww lame! I was really liking the drawings and storyboard stuff that you were posting.

I don't really watch TV nowadays but this would have been a cool show to watch.

Adam Kelly said...

I hope this isn't some sort of lame joke...

Mitch Leeuwe said...

Are you serious?

I even hadn't the chance to watch it... I was waiting for it to air on Nick in the Netherlands.

Sean Szeles said...

Yes, unfortunately I'm serious. We weren't picked up for the rest of our second season. We're finishing up the last episodes, but who knows when and if they'll air. They've been moving us around in different time slots like crazy.

murrayb- yes, el tigre was doing pretty good in the ratings, but apparently didn't live up to the top dog's ridiculously high expectations. Basically, Spongebob, which has been on for years and years, and as you stated was not a hit when it first premiered, is still doing better than el tigre in the ratings. I don't know why, but they insist on comparing one with the other, and el tigre loses. And even though everyone who watches it likes it, and it just premiered very very well internationally, it doesn't make a difference to them. They're just gonna keep churning out show after show until they get something more popular than Spongebob, but that will never happen. Just bad business. It's like in features when people expect a movie to make 600 millions dollars, and it only makes 300 million dollars, and they call it a failure.

I was so looking forward to see it!

What a great show!
That's really a bad executive decision.
El tigre will always be in my 'corazon'.
To all of you who haven't seen it, you can watch full episodes on TurboNick.com

This really sucks. I loved Buzz on Maggie and El Tigre.
I think the sad thing is that both shows were great and had really crummy time slots.
But I guess in Nickelodeon's mind this frees up more space for another show about "kids in school dealing with drama" that the network is gorged with.

Gary Doodles said...

it sucks, but at least you got to make history... you gave new life to a controversial medium.

Claudio Sanchez said...

That's really bad. Those dirtbags. It's all about the $$$$ and them making getting a bonus at the end of the year.

So, what does that mean?? are you guys going to finish the 1st season??? Your team doesnt work for nick? you develop this show independently kind of thing???

Miguel said...

I´m really , really sorry . I ve watched it via P2P (Of course it has not be aired yet here in Spain)and it´s a great show. Thanks for sharing your brilliant work.

PS my 2!/2 years daughter asks me everyday: -dad Why bad guacamole transformed Tiger´s dad and granpa?
This is lame from Nickel.
I will buy your dvd if available.

For reals???? But I just got my full set o' bobble-heads!

Goddammit. This calls for booze.

Sorry to hear it man. I'm sure you'll bounce back on your feet quickly.

Congrats on your pitch-promo as well.

Alex Dudley said...

This really sucks. I love El Tigre, because it's witty and so well done. You should pitch something of equal awesomness to Cartoon Network. They need a show like this.

Jamal O said...

Dam this really sux.

Some shows deserve to get canceled.

This one Absolutely does NOT.

Its a real shame. I was extremely impressed with everything about this show. Concept, Animation, and Design were all cutting edge.

I'm growing more and more weary of executive decisions like this.

Anyway I've seen some of your boards around on the net and they were Dope. Good luck on your new opportunities.

Hopefully they wont end up like this.

thats a load of el shit! how good does a cartoon have to be to stay on the air!?! by far one of the best shows in a long time.. r.i.p

Sean Szeles said...

Thanks for the kind words everyone. El Tigre will live on in our hearts.

Adam Kelly said...

As one of the animation team I think I'm really gonna miss this show when we're done with it...

"This is gonna be awesome if we survive!"
Unfortunately not this time Manny...

What do you expect from the network that cancelled Danny Phantom?

The president of Nick, Cyma Zarghami is heartless. Two years ago she canned Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron and Fairly Odd Parents, but FOP got an order for 22 more segments.

Personally I don't care for El Tigre, but their Halloween episode showed great potential for the show if they would go from two 11 minute shorts to a one 22 minute show.

I've been working on getting DP back into production for two years now and am not giving up. If you want it, let Nick know.

Like I said, I'm not a fan of this show, I don't like it but if anyone wants to help to get this "person" canned, I'm all for giving you writing info.

Nickelodeon
Attn: Programming
1515 Broadway
NY NY 10036

Also, write to Sumner Redstone, President of Viacom...that's always fun..but don't expect a reply...in two years and 75 letters I got one reply promising "new and exciting" new shows....oh well!

sorry to hear this. what can you do? its out of your hands, in fact its sad that the fate of cartoons and our jobs in the industry is out of our collective hands. i guess. until we gain some leverage somehow we will be expendable as will the shows. if they aren't putting enough money in an executives pocket, or getting those high ratings or supporting leadfilled mattel toys, then shit. it must be a horrible cartoon.

but fuck it though. just keep up the great work wherever you go. Good cartoons will come back. eventually. you'll see.

Jeremy Bernstein said...

Sorry to hear about this Sean. This show had heart and great design and some of the best flash animation out there.

This is terrible news! El Tigre had more heart than almost any cartoon on today! Btw, I didn't know you did The Buzz Maggie, I liked that show too but Disney isn't faithful to animation anymore, unless it's CGI.

What a crock of shite. I can't believe how poorly Nick treated this amazing show... seems like they have no idea what to do with a potential hit show except run it into the ground by way of piss-poor programming. They don't deserve it anyway. Best of luck to you and the other talented people who worked on it.

Krystal: No!!! Jorge you can't cancel El Tigre!!! Many reasons why:
1. I have a fangirl obsession with the show
2. I have fourteen fan chars
3. Alot of people are madly in love with the show
4. It helps us to understand other cultures (the grave escape episode)
5. It has Chibis!!!
6. It has a different atmosphere than any other sshwo. Spongebob is just a completely random show who never sticks to its story.
7. Frida is the kind of spunky character that everybody wants to watch
I have plenty more...

To be honest, I'm glad this show was canceled. It serves them right. Let's face it this show WAS a failure.

Sean Szeles said...

huh? who does it serve right?

Anonymous said...

Well it serves the general public right since we're not subjected to it anymore...

Sean Szeles said...

"Well it serves the general public right since we're not subjected to it anymore..."

Oh, okay. If that's what you meant to say, you shouldn't have used the phrase "Serves them right" because that refers to "us", the creators of the show.

wow my kid loves that show it alwasy on at wierd times though like 8 oclock at night or like 12 on a saturday whatsup with that ... this cartoon never got a chance ...i mean yo gabba gabba is better then el tigre yeah okk!!!this show was great i recored every single episode .. there arent too many spanish cartoon for kids ...damn maybe if his name was danny it be a different show !!!!

Dude, this sucks. It's pointless to produce shows for Nick since they'll only be cancelled within two seasons. As an aspiring cartoonist with dreams on animation, it's quite discouraging to think that there's no point in making a show that won't be allowed to grow, or if it becomes successful will have the life choked out of it completely and every red cent abrogated for an executive barbecue grill.

I wonder how much it costs to purchase the rights to a cancelled show so a company can distribute the show (including un-aired episodes) via DVD... the one thing I really hate about cancelled shows is that they disappear from reality for years and true fans have no access to them. It's like rubbing salt to the wound. How do you guys feel about such a situation?

Anonymous said...

I really do hope Nick decides to bring it back.

Anonymous said...

The sad realisation is that animation is business. If the EPs don't see a immediate profit from a "product", they can it. It's all about keeping money in the bank and share holders happy. Nick has cancelled 90% of all the shows I LOVED coming from their studios.

I do a small flash animated segment on an Australian TV show.. It's my first time dealing with big wigs and trying to convince them stuff is funny AND good.. Man it's not easy. I feel your pain. I work from home, so it's hard to argue your case to people who are in Sydney when you're on the other side of the country!

This sounds like the dark age of cartoons is about to return...

i loved that show it made me laguph and it made me happy

Lesson to all you animation wanna -bees out there --- don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Truly sad.

I really have been hoping for months now something would swoop outta the sky and save El Tigre, but I guess Nick just doesn't get it. After all, with [insert yellow square-panted reference here] becoming the headlining sellout production, who needs new shows? What a joke.

I'm still watching episodes every now and again on turbonick, and I can attest that not even one show has the potential to make me laugh like "El Tigre." Smart, funny, and you're right: it had fucking heart.

I could complain for days, but I won't. I have articles due in... two hours for the mag. But know that this chica in SLC, UT salutes you.

...now where'd I put my blue hair dye?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I loved and still love this show Im gonna go crazy without it!!!! crazy I tell you!!!!

Anonymous said...

Why is it cancelled? This show beats spongebob! Anyways Spongebob is so stupid and makes no sense!! That is the show you should cancel! i dont know you but Jorge you cant do this. i had a friend named manny who died in a car aciddent who love this show dearly. You gotto to bring it back. Your show inspired me to draw! I made this camic called "twinz." I wish i could show you my pictures but i dont know how to put them on the computer because i am 12 and a little slow on the up take. But i love el tigre it was the best show ever. =( please bring it back. You are making me cry.

Anonymous said...

WHY?...(person who wrote this is crying...quietly)

Anonymous said...

BRING IT BACK NOW GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
IF YOU DONT I'LL RISK MY LIFE FOR IT!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

o c'mon!!! then why are they gonna air more episodes (which I am extremlly glad and my friends)
hey people that created El Tigre dont be sad because the nick people did that ok just look out there look at your El Tigre fans you made many proud...ignore the mean people and see all the good things great job Sandra and Jorge
you made history we love El Tigre... and whenever it airs I'll be there to watch it even if I dont have that neilson thing just remember that there were more viewers than what you got on the premiere the ones with out internet and without that neilson box thing have also watched just like me but now I do exept for the box thing.

dude this really sucked i mean really sucked...i loved el tigre its an awsome show to watch but nick had to pull the plug on this one...it had good storylines and great animation but there was gonna be a new season but didn't got the chance...now in days people are making petitions and asking the nick heads to re-air new el tigre but nick put on shows like icarly and victorious which i don't get.. First was cartoons then these shows full of teens and drama...its sad that cartoons like el tigre are about to die off...the fucking network put these lame shows for some retarted reason and disney channel got more ratings cause they still have cartoons on like phineas and ferb or other crap.

Nick probably ran out of shit to put on their time slots and keep these pointless shows on the air.Jorge and sandra are hard workers and deserve another chance to make another season its just sad theres new el tigre it would of been awsome.I find it dissapointing...
Nick Is Fucking Fail
