Regular Show - "Mordecai & the Rigbys"

This episode of Regular Show aired last week. I wrote and storyboarded it with Shion Takeuchi. This is an earlier storyboard version that contains more/different jokes and a couple of cool different scenes that had to be cut. There was some funny stuff in this version that I was proud of and missed in the final, but what can you do. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I also wrote the songs that were featured in this episode and I thought they were going to be re-recorded by the composers, but they just kept my versions in. I just recorded everything in my apartment playing the different parts and threw a drum loop on there. Also both these songs are extended versions because the versions in the final episode had to be cut down for time.

PARTY TONIGHT (note: this is me singing scratch, latter replaced with Mordecai's voice)

SWEET LITTLE BABY as sung by Angel (actually me in the final episode, but this is a scratch version as well)

UPDATE 2: Here are the lyrics to the Party Tonight song for those who are interested.

Your eyes staring into my eyes
Who am I but a guy with two eyes on the prize
And the prize in my eyes is 10 times
The surprise in your eyes as I kiss you goodnight.

Your smile is the fire that rocks my soul
gonna remember it until I grow old
'Cause life is too short we gotta do things right
So baby let's just party to-night-
Baby let's just party to-night

We've come out on top, We're in front of the line
We're here to rock out and have a good time
'Cause the past is the past and the future is bright
So baby let's just party to-night
Baby let's just party to-night

They really should've kept that Benson flashback in there, but I still really liked this episode. Which segments of the board did you do?

Sean Szeles said...

Well, Shion and I collaborated on all the segments, but the beats were broken up as follows:

Beginning- me
learning to play- Shion
playing records/ future selves- me
montage- Shion
Open Mic, Margaret t-shirt- Shion
Futures come back, whole performance- me
Admitting to lipsyncing climax- Shion

There were also small parts that were added by JG Quintel & Mike Roth.

You can kind of keep track just by looking at the drawing styles, though sometimes we get help cleaning up these boards when we're rushed for time. Chris Reccardi helped clean up the final performance, for example.

Dude! Really cool, I wish I still had CN

Would u be able to post the version with Mordecai's vocals?

Also, could u perhaps make an mp3 version of your song? I'd love to have it on my ipod.

Sean Szeles said...

I don't have the Mordecai version, but maybe you can find it elsewhere? I'm sure someone must've ripped it from the cartoon.

Great songs, Sean! Love the show and the songs really make it all that much more awesomer. Here at the Jenkins household, we have this show constantly in our DVR.

Thanks for posting this, I gotta say that Mordecai and the Rigbys was probably my favorite episode since Just Set Up The Chairs.
Man, I really loved the Benson flashback, I wish that could have been kept. I also really liked the "bathroom" jokes, though I can see how that might not have made it past the censors, still, that was really clever.
How many band names did you guys come up with before you settled on the final ones? I gotta say that I probably prefer the band names in the final episode to the ones in this one, but they're all really funny.
Also, does Chris Reccardi write/storyboard any episodes? I really like his work on PPGs/Ren and Stimpy, but I haven't seen him board anything on this show yet.
By the way, I also really enjoyed 'Ello Govna.

The song rocks Sean. A scene that should have been kept was when Mordecai and Rigby handshaking in the montage. That really showed friendship and that Rigby is actually a nice guy. (my fav character)

Dracold said...

Oh my god... These storyboards... You are actually getting paid for drawing cartoon characters for this awesome and funny show?! This is a dream job man. I mean, I was cursed with the intellect and now I am stuck in scientific and technical profession. If only I had drawn more when I was younger... or had played more the instruments. Yet now I remember I didn't have the nerves. It had never been so entertaining while I was forced to do it. It seems it's too late now.
Anyway, the song i so cool, I guess I will not listen to anything else for few weeks now >:]

Is J.G Quintel singing in the episode? A lot of cartoons use sound-alikes (Especially Disney) so I'm curious.

This show has just started in my country and I thought: awww just another regular show on cn. Then I watched this episode and heard this song. My english is not very good so I can't describe what happened with me, but if i can say anything is that: MAN THIS IS F*****G AWESOME!!!! Now every weekend at 19:50 I sit in front of the TV with my younger brother and we're laughing until we can't breath while watching this show. And of course we "sing" the Party Tonight every time. So if you read this and you can understand this strange text I just want to say thank you and say thanks for the whole cast who's working on Regular Show, for making our borig life in our retarded country awesome!

Sean,

Who really owns the song now that it was used and broadcast on CN? I downloaded this song from the link you provided, but I really wanted to pay for it (mostly because I live in a city with lots of musicians and a lot of my family is in the music business). I can only hope that this song and any others you produce for the show are properly copyrighted and published to provide you credit and compensation for your talent and efforts.

It really is a great song.

Cheers,

MD

'Party Tonight' is one of the greatest songs ever written for a television show. Regular Show is a legend in its own time.

Anonymous said...

This was an excellent episode and easily one of, if not the best in the series. Even the cut content in the storyboard was full of gems. The only things I can say were soundly better in the final episode were the initial band names, the extra time travel lines, especially "I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise", and the final scene with Mordecai talking to Margaret. This was a wonderful finale to Regular Show's first season.

Speaking of which, do you know why the first season was only twelve episodes? That seems like an awfully small number compared to seasons two and three.

I'm somewhat new to guitar, but I'm trying to learn this song. It's going well, but I can't figure out how you managed to get that tone in the dual solo 54 seconds in. Any chance anyone knows?
