Kevin Dart's Yuki 7 - Fun!

I've caught the Yuki-7 fever!!!

Here are some fake film frames I whipped up for fun starring one of Kevin Dart's Yuki-7 paper dolls I got at Gallery Nucleus. I shot them with a digital slr camera, and then cropped them, and added the titles in photoshop. (Godzilla print by Josh Ellingson)

Drinky Crow Part 2 - "Elephant Man"

Hey everybody, the second episode of The Drinky Crow Show that I storyboarded airs tonight, Jan. 4 at 12:15 am on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network). The episode is called "Elephant Man," and is about, well, the Elephant Man of course! It was written by Eric Kaplan, is part friendship story, part medical drama, and part television commentary. I haven't even seen the completed episode myself, so I'm excited to see how it turned out.

I am 8-bit #4

It's time for another I am 8-bit art show!!!! It's tomorrow night at the World of Wonder storefront Gallery, 6650 Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles.

I collaborated with my girlfriend Kellie Smith to make a Luigi plush. Well, it's more of a wool sculpture because the whole things made of wool! Nothing is sewn except for the arms and legs to the body. It's a crazy process where you stab some wool with barbed needles to get it to knot itself. And you sculpt the shapes you want and knot them together. It takes a really, really long time.

He's about 9 inches tall, but doesn't stand really well except when leaning against something.
Here he is in progress. Kellie made the whole thing with me helping a bit. She worked off some drawings I did, and I tried to direct her to get it as close as she could. I think it turned out awesome!

PART 2

For my painting this year, I decided to tackle one of my favorite games growing up, Bubble Bobble! My brother and I used to play this nonstop. Above is the final painting, 5x7, done in cel vinyl on illustration board.

Here's the final drawing I went off of. You may noticed that I flipped the guy in the bubble for the final piece. I think it makes a better composition.

El Tigre - Cut Board Seq. 2

Another short gag that was cut for time. Chui the chupacabra is hungry!!! You may recognize the dude in the goat costume.

El Tigre Board- Cut Seq.

Here's a short sequence that was cut from an upcoming episode of El Tigre. It's a pivotal point in the story where Manny and Frida are going to abandon their friend in the desert, but they get lost, and he ends up saving their lives.

We spend a fair amount of time on them abandoning him but completely gloss over the getting lost and saving of lives. It wasn't in the script. Well, it was insinuated that it took place with a single line of dialogue, but I wanted to actually show it happening. I tried to make it as epic but short as I could. Everyone agreed that it made the story stronger, but alas, it was eventually cut for time.

We tried to fill these Tigre episodes with so much awesomeness that they should've been 22min episodes instead of 11min. And the 22min episodes we did do maybe should've been hour-longs. I don't know if the final episode will even air now, but hopefully it does.

Yeah yeah yeah, it's been a while. I'm done with El Tigre (tear) and am working on some new projects from home on my new Cintiq. Yup, I did it, and it's awesome. So hopefully, more posts, more often. Hmm, that kinda rhymes.

Last Birthday

Okay, I promise this is the last birthday illustration I post. Well, for now anyways. I was just that I got hit with 3 friend's birthdays one after the other, and all of them amazing artists, so that's all I've been working on recently. This last one was for my friend Katie Rice. It's my second digital illustration, and I really like how it turned out. I again inked it in Flash and added the textures in Photoshop. But this time in Flash, I tried just inking the drawing by hand with the brush tool, instead of using the line tool. It was kinda hard to get used to at first, trying to get good thick and thins, but I think it turned out well. The letters are also hand drawn, I don't know why you wouldn't think they were, but some people had asked me about it. Enjoy!

Birthday Shmirthday

"Man, I need to post more stuff," I says to myself I says. I've been pretty busy just trying to make new artwork and also been busy just trying to live life. I made this illustration for my friend Gabe Swarr for his birthday last week. He's a huge Mario fan, along with most other video games, so I thought I'd take a crack at it. I've never really done any digital illustrations, so this was a first. I made all the artwork in Flash working off of the drawing I did, then I did all the textures in Photoshop. I really like how it turned out, especially the characters. And it all started with the drawing, which came almost out of nowhere. I was sketching different Marios when I thought to myself, I'll probably like drawing Luigi better, taking in Gabe's philosophy the you like drawing your own body-type. And then Boom! This drawing came out of nowhere, first-time, no erasies. I was amazed.
I posted a detail of Luigi's face just because I like it so. And when I showed people the illustration on paper, they always turned it around to look at him. So here it is for your convenience. I don't want you straining your back, flipping your monitor over. Oh yeah, you're probably wondering what Luigi's saying. I did it by hand afterwards, so that's why it's missing. It's not anything profound of funny even. Mario's depressed, so Luigi's trying to console him by saying, "C'mon, you're not old, you're CLASSIC!!!"
